The Sangokemi Cultural Art and Creative Development Foundation is a Lagos-based organisation committed to strengthening cultural identity, expanding creative opportunity, and supporting community wellbeing.

We work at the intersection of arts, heritage, education, and social development, creating programmes that inspire, empower, and transform.

A society where creativity, culture, and community development strengthen identity, opportunity, and sustainable progress.

“Our culture carries identity, memory and meaning even when practised quietly or misunderstood.”

Founder's Message

My name is Ifadera Sangokemi Aneyemi, and the Sangokemi Cultural Art and Creative Development Foundation was born from a very personal journey, one that began long before I ever imagined creating an organisation.

I grew up in a small town where community values were strong, and even though many of our cultural practices were carried out quietly, sometimes even passively because of the stigma placed on our heritage as “fetish” or “archaic,” something in me held on to them. Even as a child, I sensed that these practices were not things to be ashamed of. They were reminders that we are a people of identity, and that understanding who we are is essential to navigating life with clarity and confidence.

As I grew older, it became impossible to ignore the deeper truth: the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism did not just disrupt our history they stripped many of us of the right to know ourselves. They created generations of people disconnected from their own cultural memory, unsure of their heritage, and often made to feel that their identity was something to hide rather than honour.

That realisation stayed with me.

It became a quiet ache, a persistent sense that something needed to be restored. Not just for me, but for the generations coming after us.

This foundation is my response to that ache.

The Sangokemi Cultural Art and Creative Development Foundation exists to create a path back to ourselves.

A path where young people can learn what their culture truly is, where artists can express the stories that live in our communities, and where our heritage is not something whispered about, but something carried with pride.

Through our work in the arts, heritage education, and community empowerment, we are creating spaces where culture becomes legacy, where creativity becomes healing, and where communities can reconnect with the knowledge that has always belonged to them.

Thank you for taking the time to understand our work.

Thank you for believing in culture, in creativity, and in the importance of remembering who we are.
